The November Blue campaign runs throughout the month to raise awareness about prostate cancer. In an interview with CNN Radio this Wednesday (3), urologist Franz Campos reinforced the importance of early diagnosis.
He highlighted that, in the initial stage, there are no identifiable symptoms for the disease, which further reinforces the need for men to seek a doctor for preventive examinations: “90% of tumors are cured if diagnosed early.”
“November Azul insists that the entire male population over 50 years old be followed up, prostate cancer kills 1 man every 34 minutes in the country, we predict more than 65,000 new cases and mortality at around 15,000, these are alarming numbers ”, warned the doctor.
According to Franz Campos, the male population’s resistance to having a digital rectal exam “has been changing progressively”, largely because of the work to raise awareness.
The urologist also reinforced that the pandemic greatly affected the number of exams and consultations, due to social isolation, and the retraction in numbers “worries a lot”, although there are signs of recovery.
“During the pandemic, we had a significant 18% drop in biopsies, with the return to normal activity and massive vaccination, we noticed in 2021 to 2020 a 27% increase in the demand for biopsies”, he said.
