The fire at a nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine and the granting of humanitarian visas in Brazil to Ukrainian citizens are among the highlights of the 5 facts morning of March 4th.
Nuclear power plant fire
A fire caused by an attack by the Russian army on Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine was brought under control by local teams. According to the Ukrainian nuclear regulator, there has been no change in the plant’s radiation level and there is no critical damage to the unit. The site, however, is now under Russian control.
Zelensky asks for help
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of intentionally shooting at the plant. He claimed that Russian tanks aim at atomic blocks and “know what they are shooting at”. Zelensky also called on European leaders to stop Russian forces “before it becomes a nuclear disaster”.
Sanctions against oligarchs
The United States has decided to apply new sanctions against Russian oligarchs. The eight elites cut off from the country’s financial system have been identified as President Vladimir Putin’s companions, family members and associates, according to the US government. The assets of these people will be frozen and the properties must be blocked.
Humanitarian visa in Brazil
Brazil has announced that it will give 180-day humanitarian visas to Ukrainian refugees who come to the country. The measure provides that immigrants can apply for temporary residence in the national territory for up to two years.
Third round of negotiations
After agreeing on the creation of “humanitarian corridors” for the passage of refugees, supplies and resources, the governments of Russia and Ukraine decided to hold a new round of negotiations – the third since the beginning of the war. Scheduled for the beginning of next week, the meeting should discuss a political regulation of the conflict, which, this Friday (4), reached its eighth day.
