Number of births in the 1st half of 2022 in Brazil is the lowest since 2012

The number of birth records in Brazil in the first six months of 2022 is the lowest for a first semester since 2012. The conclusion is part of a survey carried out by the CNN based on data from the National Association of Registrars of Natural Persons (Arpen).

In the first half of 2022, there were 1.5 million births. In the same period of 2012, just over 1.7 (1,704,405) million people were born in Brazil between January and June.

The analysis made by CNN also shows that there was a greater drop in births during the pandemic. In the first half of 2019, there were more than 1.7 million (1,720,886) births in Brazil. The following year, the number dropped to just over 1.5 million (1,583,218).

The drop in the birth rate during the pandemic is noticeable in all Brazilian states and the Federal District. In São Paulo, the largest state in the country, 317 thousand people were born in the first half of 2022, compared to 367 thousand births in the same period in 2019. Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro also had significant drops: 142 thousand and 112 thousand in 2019, to 131 thousand and 100 thousand in 2022, respectively.

For the vice president of Arpen, Luis Carlos Vendramin Júnior, the birth rate in Brazil has already shown a recovery over the last few months. However, he believes Brazilians need more time to “fully overcome” the Covid-19 pandemic.

Although the pandemic has intensified the trend, the number of births in Brazil has been falling for at least five years. According to Vendramin, families are having fewer children and women have the possibility of postponing motherhood.

“It’s a global trend, and Brazil is also on this list with a low birth rate. And this was already happening before the pandemic, but it was undoubtedly intensified by the health crisis, which continues to reverberate even in 2022”, said Luis Carlos Vendramin Júnior.
