Number of deaths in Israeli attacks in Lebanon exceeds 1,800, says Ministry of Health

Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon killed at least 16 people and injured 59 on Saturday, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

Most of the deaths occurred in southern Lebanon, in the city of Nabatiyeh, with additional injuries in the Beqaa region, the Ministry said on Sunday (20).

Since Israel intensified its attacks against Hezbollah on September 16, at least 1,802 people have been killed and 9,330 injured, according to a survey by the CNN based on data from the Ministry of Health.

Heavy shelling continued on Sunday, with Israel launching attacks on Beirut’s southern suburbs and towns near the Lebanese-Israeli border.

Hezbollah strikes back

About 200 projectiles fired by Hezbollah crossed into Israel on Sunday, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

“The IDF will continue to defend the state of Israel and its people against the threat posed by the terrorist organization Hezbollah,” the army said in a statement.

Although Hezbollah frequently fires groups of rockets at Israel from southern Lebanon, these attacks generally cause few casualties and only moderate damage, in part due to Israel’s extensive air defenses.

Sunday’s rocket fire came as Israel bombarded southern Lebanon with airstrikes throughout the day, and launched a new series of attacks on a Hezbollah-linked financial institution in the evening.
