Brazil reached the highest number of defaulters since the beginning of the historical series, made by Serasa, since 2016. There are currently 66.6 million people whose names are negative for debt. The data, released this Friday (8), are from Serasa Experian, referring to the month of May this year and represent an increase of four million negative names (6.3%).
As of April 2022, more than half a million people have registered.
Also according to the survey, most debts are with the banking and card segment, which represents 28.2% of the total. Then come the essential bills such as water, electricity and gas, with 22.7%. Following are the retail and financial sectors (12.5% each), services (10.8%), telephony (7.1%) and insurance (2.2%).
According to Luiz Rabi, economist at Serasa Experian, the rise in negatives is not surprising.
“It is an expected scenario, since the country’s economic situation is still very unstable, with inflation, interest rates and high unemployment levels,” he said. Rabi understands that the extraordinary withdrawal of the FGTS, of R$ 1 thousand, can help the negative ones to clear their name.
The data also indicate that the youngest age group (18 to 25 years old) was the one that grew the most in default, in the comparison between May 2021 and May 2022. The increase was 10.75%, from 7.73 million to 8.56 million negatives. The number of elderly people (60 years and over) also increased significantly.
While in May last year there were 10.6 million defaulters, in the fifth month of this year the increase was 8.3%, reaching 11.49 million people.
Economists responsible for the research explain that the young and the elderly are failing to pay bills because they are more vulnerable and feel the weight of inflation more. The younger ones because they are looking for a job or earn little at the beginning of their careers.
In the case of older people, food and medication expenses have a significant impact on monthly expenses.
Although these two age groups were the most impacted in the last survey released, the highest absolute number of defaulters is among people between 26 and 40 years old. There are 23.6 million negatives in this age group.
Then come Brazilians between 41 and 60, a group in which there are 22.8 million in default.
