Number of donations and volunteers drops in the North region, shows research

The number of people who make donations or volunteer actions fell in the North region. In 2015, 40% of the population claimed to make some kind of donation. The number dropped to 38% in 2020 and is now at 28%.

The data are from the third edition of the Brazil Donation Survey by the Institute for the Development of Social Investment (Idis), with the support of Movimento Bem Maior.

The South region had the highest increase. In 2020, the region had 30% donors. The number rose to 38% in 2022. The other region to show an increase was the Midwest, with a jump from 27% to 32%.

The Northeast (40% to 39%) and Southeast (39% to 37%) regions showed stability. The national sample shows that 36% of respondents said they had made a donation in 2022. The number points to stability in relation to 2020, when it was 37%.

The survey shows that, in 2022, 84% of Brazilians over 18 years old were involved with some type of donation, the highest percentage recorded in the series.

While institutional donation becomes less frequent among young people between 18 and 27 years of age, it increases among mature adults, over 60 years of age.

The data still shows that the pandemic has affected donations. Nearly two-thirds (62%) of institutional givers said the pandemic had influenced their behavior, both to give more and to give less.

38% said they donated more in 2022 due to the pandemic, while almost a quarter of donors (24%) said they donated less because the pandemic worsened their living conditions.
