Number of fires in the Amazon in 2022 exceeds 2021, but is lower than the record of 2004

The year 2022 is not over yet, but the Brazilian Amazon has already registered more fires between January and September than in the entire period of 2021. The data are from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).

There were already 76,587 outbreaks registered until September 19 of this year, a number 2% higher than that identified in all months of 2021, with 75,090 outbreaks.

The month of September usually closes the dry season, which begins in May, which worsens the levels of forest fires due to the lack of rain.

Regarding the numbers that comprise the period between January and September only, for comparative purposes, Inpe recorded 56,166 in the first nine months of 2021. The worst period for the mentioned months was in 2005, with 163,340 outbreaks.

The worst mark for a full year was in 2004, when 218,637 were registered in 12 months.

The Amazon is the biome most affected by the number of fires, followed by the Cerrado (which had 38,295 outbreaks this year) and the Atlantic Forest (which had 8,220 outbreaks this year).
