Number of fires in the Amazon is the highest for June since 2007, says Inpe

The Amazon recorded 2,562 fires in June – the highest number for the month since 2007, when there were 3,519 fires.

In a single day (27), 216 outbreaks were identified. The data are from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).

The highest number for the month of June since the beginning of the historical series, in 1998, was 9,179 outbreaks in 2004.

The year 2022 accumulates 7,533 outbreaks during the first six months.

For the same period, 2004 was the year with the most fires: there were 17,340 in the first half of the year.

That same year also records another mark: it was the worst in the historical series with the highest number of outbreaks in 12 months: 218,637.

The average number of outbreaks per year is 107,921, with the lowest record (48,169 outbreaks) in 2000.

The high of fires usually start in the month of June, lasting until October, when they fall again.

The Amazon is the biome with the highest number of foci since the beginning of the historical series; in second place is the Cerrado and the third is usually between the Caatinga and the Atlantic Forest.
