Number of missing people rises to 5 after landslide in Amazonas; one person died

Beruri City Hall, in the interior of Amazonas, stated, in the early evening of this Sunday (1st), that there are 5 people missing in the tragedy that devastated the community of Arumã. A child died and the body has already been rescued by firefighters.

According to the municipality’s communications office, two of the missing were inside a house that was swallowed by mud. Two other residents were buried while trying to protect themselves. The other missing man was on a houseboat on the banks of the river.

According to Beruri’s press office, 10 people were injured. The majority presented a hypertensive crisis, and one resident is suspected of having a fracture.

Around 200 people are homeless or displaced. They were all welcomed at a community center in the neighboring community, São Lázaro. The landslide caused the destruction of 47 homes, as well as 1 health center, 1 municipal school, 1 artesian well and some churches.

The Government of Amazonas, through the State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema), sent a team with men from the Fire Department, Civil Defense, Legal Medical Institute (IML), as well as employees from the State Secretariat of Social Assistance (Seas) , State Department of Justice, Human Rights and Citizenship (Sejusc), State Department of Health (SES) and Health Surveillance Foundation (FVS), to provide assistance.

The work is being coordinated by the Amazonas Civil Defense and the Amazonas Military Fire Department (CBMAM), which sent divers and qualified specialists to rescue collapsed areas.

The rescue actions will take place throughout the night, and may continue into the early morning if it is safe for the teams. Governor Wilson Lima offered solidarity to the victims.

“My solidarity and prayers to the affected families. I determined full support in the search and assistance for the victims of the landslide. Our teams are on the field to do whatever it takes.”

Beruri City Hall declared an official mourning period of 3 days. In a statement, the municipal government lamented the tragedy that occurred in the Arumã community.

“We express our sincere condolences to the bereaved families. In this time of immense pain, it is important that we all come together as a community, offering our support and support to the families of victims and survivors. All the necessary resources to offer all the necessary support, whether psychological, material or structural, seeking to alleviate the consequences of this sad episode.”

According to the state’s Civil Defense, what happened in the Aramã community is the result of the process popularly known as “fallen lands” – the sliding of ravines that are on the banks of rivers that flow in the Amazon region. It is a dynamic and complex process that involves several hydrodynamic, hydrostatic, climatic, neotectonic, lithological and anthropological factors, occurring together or separately and resulting in soil erosion.
