The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Friday that the number of people who fled Ukraine had reached 2.5 million. “The number of Ukrainian refugees has tragically reached 2.5 million today,” Grandi said on his official Twitter account.
The number of refugees from Ukraine — tragically — has reached 2.5 million today.
We also estimate that about two million people are displaced inside Ukraine.
Millions forced to leave their homes by this senseless war.

“We also estimate that around 2 million people are displaced within Ukraine. Millions are forced from their homes by this senseless war,” the commissioner said. In Kiev alone, one in two residents has left the city, which is besieged by fighting.
More than 1.5 million of those who left went to Poland, Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Thursday. More than 110,000 refugees have also arrived in Germany from Ukraine since the Russian invasion began more than two weeks ago, according to Germany’s Interior Ministry.
The German Federal Police registered 109,183 refugees – including more than 13,270 people the previous day, Germany’s Interior Ministry said in a statement on Friday. However, due to the absence of border controls between Poland and Germany, where most Ukrainian refugees come from, the actual number of people arriving could be significantly higher, the ministry added.
Escape routes
Ukraine is trying to negotiate opening more humanitarian corridors for civilians to escape areas of conflict with Russian troops as attacks continue on Friday, Ukrainian officials say. Watch CNN’s special coverage live.
According to the country’s Reintegration Minister, Iryna Vereshchuk, the negotiations involve five routes:
- Mariupol – Zaporizhzhia
- Volnovakha – Pokrovsk
- Polohy – Zaporizhzhia
- Enerhodar – Zaporizhzhia
- Izium – Lozova
Vereshchuk said further attempts would be made to allow people to escape fighting in Kiev, with routes from the capital to destinations such as Bucha, Hostomel, Kozarovychi and Mykulychi.
Humanitarian corridors in Mariupol and Volnovakha were repeatedly blocked or made inaccessible over the past week amid intense fighting and bombing by Russian forces. There was more success in evacuating people from Izium, which saw widespread destruction.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov on Friday accused Russian forces of killing more civilians than Ukrainian soldiers. “I want this to be heard not just in Kiev, but all over the world,” Reznikov said in a broadcast.
