Number of weddings retreats 3% and divorces increase 4.9% in Brazil, says IBGE

A research from Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released this Friday (16) shows that, in 2023, the Number of registered weddings was 940.8 thousand, representing a 3% retreat compared to 2022 . Civil Registry statistics accounted for 440.8 thousand divorces, number 4.9% higher than in 2022 .

The largest reduction in marriages concentrated in the Southeast region (-5.0%). In relation to divorces, the Midwest and North regions showed the largest variations of 16.8% and 13.1%, respectively.

The number of same -sex marriages showed an increase of only 1.6%. Of the 11.2 thousand records, 62.7% were among female spouses. The IBGE states that this number expresses a new record since 2013, when the National Council of Justice (CNJ) has prevented notaries from refusing to celebrate same -sex marriage.

In relationships between men, there was a reduction of about 4.9%.

Among people of different sexes, the research detailed and compared the ages of 2003 until 2023. “In 2003, 8.2% of women who married were 40 years or older. In 2023, 25.1% of civil wedding records between people of different sexes occurred with women in the same age group,” he said.

Regarding men, an increase of 18.3 percentage points was found in the participation of wedding records in which men had 40 years or older. In 2003 there were 13.0%, already in 2023, 31.3%.

The research manager, Klivia Brayner, said data does not include stable unions and that the drop in records may be related to the postponement of the decision by civil marriage and the increase in the number of “re -raising”.

“The drop in wedding records does not necessarily mean that people are failing to come together. The marital situation of the person may be different from the civil situation,” said Klivia.

About divorce, the average age among men who divorced was 44.3 years, and women 41.4. “Among people of different sexes, for every 100 registered weddings, there were about 47.4 divorces in the country,” the survey said.

The analysis also revealed that the average time between the marriage date and the date of the divorce sentence or deed in 2023 was 13.8 years. In 2010, it was about 16 years.

The survey concludes that the judicial divorces granted in the first instance corresponded to 81.8%: “the largest proportion of dissolutions occurred among families consisting of minor children alone, reaching 46.3% in 2023”.
