Nurse sentenced to life in prison for killing insulin patients in the US

A nurse from Pennsylvania, in the United States, was sentenced to life in prison for killing three patients and trying to kill 19 other people who were under her care in medical centers, according to a statement from Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry.
Heather Pressdee pleaded guilty to the crimes. The former nurse's sentence includes three life sentences for intentional homicides and sentences ranging from 380 to 760 years in prison attempted murder, according to the statement.

“The accused used her position of trust as a means of poisoning patients who depended on her care,” said the prosecutor. “This guilty plea and life sentence will not return the lives lost, but it will ensure that Heather Pressdee will never have another opportunity to inflict further harm.”

The former nurse pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty, her lawyer, Phillip DiLucente, told CNN . She admitted to having “harmed with intent to kill” the 19 patients, whose ages ranged between 43 and 104 years old.

Pressdee was accused of intentionally administering lethal doses of medication to patients between 2020 and 2023 at five different medical centers. The nurse injected deadly doses of insulin into patients in Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler and Westmoreland counties in Pennsylvania.

He often administered insulin during short-staffed night shifts while working in the medical facility's medication cart, according to the complaint.

“Pressdee often took steps to ensure that his victims died before the shift change so that they would not be sent to the hospital, where the plan could be discovered through examination,” according to the lawsuit.

During the trial, relatives reported “pain and anguish caused by learning that the death of their loved ones was not natural, but caused by a criminal act.”
