The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul arrested, this Friday (27), two caregivers in a nursing home in Canoas, Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, for torturing elderly people who lived in the establishment.
The arrests occurred after audios, obtained and later released by the police, revealed threats and confirmed the existence of verbal and physical attacks carried out by the duo against the victims of a geriatric home, where they worked as caregivers.
According to Deputy Maurício Barison, who is investigating the case, the police action at the site aimed to remove suspicions from their duties, close the establishment and relocate the elderly to other geriatric homes after proving the irregularities and torture practices that took place in the area. confidentiality on site.
The public civil action for the operation was initiated by the Public Ministry and the Civil Police, together with the Health Surveillance and the Municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance.
According to investigations, elderly people were constantly attacked. The recordings, obtained by the police, proved the way the victims were treated, with screams, insults and threats made by the suspects. They were also physically attacked with pushes, slaps and even banging their heads against the walls of the place.
Still during the action, one of the elderly women, the target of the duo’s attacks, was found by the agents seriously injured with bruises on her head. She was rushed to a hospital to receive the necessary medical attention.
To the police, the elderly also reported that the caregivers told them phrases such as: “if they were there it was because they must have done a lot of bad things” and that “if they were there it was to suffer”.
After taking statements from the victims, the residents of the asylum were relocated by the municipality’s social services to other nursing homes.
After being arrested, the attackers must answer for the crime of torture in court.
The owner of the establishment and the husband of one of the caregivers are also being investigated for possible participation and omission in the crimes.
