Graphics card maker Nvidia admits the possibility of resuming the release of specialized graphics chips (GPUs) focused on mining cryptocurrencies. Colette Kress, executive vice president and chief financial officer, said this.
If demand rises to a “meaningful” level, she said, Nvidia could re-launch CMP – GPUs with remote video outputs, which could reduce costs. Currently, RTX 30 series graphics cards are popular among miners, however, according to Kress, the company no longer considers cryptocurrencies an important part of their business.
“The demand from gamers is very high and we think it exceeds our current supply,” she added.
The renewal of CMP is expected to free up graphics cards for gamers. During the current rally of cryptocurrencies, a shortage of video cards arose again in the market, as it was in 2017-2018.
At the same time, Nvidia remains a defendant in a lawsuit from investors who accuse the company of distorting information about the role of selling equipment to miners in its business.
“The management knew that the increased sales due to the demand for cryptocurrencies were not sustainable, because the demand for cryptocurrencies was volatile,” the plaintiffs say.
