Michael Kagan believes that, for example, a chat bot with artificial intelligence ChatGPT will be more useful than cryptocurrency mining.
“All this cryptographic stuff needed to be processed in parallel. Nvidia was the best, so people just programmed it for that purpose. We bought a lot of all sorts of things, but in the end it fell apart, because it does not bring anything useful to society. But AI, on the contrary, carries,” Kagan said in an interview with The Guardian. “I never believed that cryptocurrencies could benefit humanity. People do crazy things, but they buy your products.”
Recall that in 2021, Nvidia released software that artificially limited the ability to use its video cards for ether mining. But programmers quickly found a way around these settings.
In October 2022, the company decided to remove restrictions from new drivers. The decision to limit the hashrate on video cards was made against the backdrop of a boom in demand for Nvidia video accelerators. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a massive shortage of semiconductor chips, so graphics cards have become scarce and their prices have risen significantly. In an attempt to solve the problem, the company switched to the release of video cards with the prefix LHR in the name, on which it programmatically limited the hashrate when mining cryptocurrencies.
