NVIDIA introduced 6 new video cards at once: even insiders did not know about three

Today, January 3, NVIDIA, as promised, held an official event at CES 2023, during which it announced a new desktop video card and five video cards for laptops at once. Let’s start with mobile GPUs like the RTX 4090, RTX 4080, RTX 4070, RTX 4060, and RTX 4050. NVIDIA has confidently stated that these laptop chips offer the best performance-to-value ratio in all market segments, and we’ve created these video cards exclusively for gamers and enthusiasts – not a word was said about workstations.

At the top of the line of mobile GPUs is the flagship NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 with 16 GB of internal video memory, but here I would like to focus on one very important point. The fact is that although laptop graphics cards have the same naming scheme as desktop options, they are fundamentally different in their characteristics – RTX 4090 for PC and RTX 4090 for laptops are completely different things, so it would be wrong to compare them. However, this is logical, because it is simply unrealistic to install a video card with a power consumption of 400 W in a laptop, so chips for mobile platforms are greatly reduced.

Accordingly, the mobile RTX 4090 comes with an NVIDIA AD103 graphics core (76 SM cores and 9728 CUDA cores) – these are the same specifications as the desktop RTX 4080, only the mobile version is limited to 150W (with the ability to “overclock” to 175W) and its frequency is slightly lower. Right behind the flagship video card is the mobile RTX 4080 for high-performance laptops – it has 12 GB of internal video memory, there are only 58 SM cores, and the CUDA core is 7424. This video card received the NVIDIA AD104 graphics core, which is also installed in the RTX 4070 Ti, only for laptops it was trimmed slightly and limited to a TGP of 150 watts with the ability to “boost” up to 175 watts.

NVIDIA said that the first laptops on the above-mentioned video cards will appear on February 8, their price will start from $ 1999, and the performance increase compared to the previous generation of video cards will be 3 times (in 4K resolution).

More affordable graphics cards are the RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 models, which, according to the representatives of the “green team”, were created specifically for the mainstream laptop market. Both video cards received 8 GB of GDDR6 video memory, and the main difference between the models lies in the clock frequency of the GPU and the TGP parameter. For example, both graphics cards will ship with a power limit of 115W, but with dynamic boost, this can be raised by 25W to 140W. At the same time, the younger model will also have a version with reduced power consumption of only 85 W, which will simplify the cooling system or extend battery life at peak loads.

Rounding out the list of laptop graphics cards is the RTX 4050 with 6 GB of onboard video memory, which the company said is new for entry-level mobile gaming systems. This video card also received a configuration with a TGP of 115 W (with a gain of up to 140 W), there is a power saving mode and a relatively high GPU clock speed of 2370 MHz.

The RTX 4070, RTX 4060, and RTX 4050 will go on sale starting Feb. 22 starting at $999 for a base laptop – NVIDIA says these solutions will be enough to play 1440p at 80 FPS and above, but in which games no one indicates such performance will be available.

And, of course, the manufacturer officially introduced the RTX 4070 Ti, which is actually the previously canceled RTX 4080 12 GB. The characteristics, as previously reported by insiders, completely agreed, but the company promises to sell the model at a price of $ 799 – RTX 4080 en 12 GB was originally supposed to be sold at $ 100 more. The only problem is that the RTX 4070 Ti is already on sale in some countries, but the price for it has already exceeded $ 1,000 – the demand is too high to sell the novelty at the recommended price. But if the price tag still drops to $800, then the RTX 4070 Ti can be called an excellent choice for the money, given the support for DLSS 3.
