Nvidia today unveiled the Hopper architecture and the H100 accelerator based on the GH100 GPU. The company also revealed details about the product, which nominally announced a year ago. It’s about the Grace processor. Recall that a year ago we were shown a certain board, which included this CPU and some other chip. Now we know what’s what, and everything turned out to be much more interesting.

Let’s start with the fact that in the same image from a year ago there was a board with a Grace processor on the left and a GH100 GPU on the right. Of course, a year ago, Nvidia could not say anything about the graphics part.
What is Grace? Nvidia doesn’t really explain much, but pays attention to what is called the Grace CPU Superchip. These are simply two identical processors connected by a new generation NVLink-C2C bus with a bandwidth of 900 GB / s. For such a bunch, Nvidia is talking about 144 processor cores in the maximum configuration, which means that one CPU offers 72 cores. It is also worth highlighting the LPDDR5X memory controller with a bandwidth of 1 TB / s and 396 MB of cache. Processor architecture – Arm v9.

But even the Grace CPU Superchip is not Nvidia’s crowning achievement in this segment. At the presentation, the head of the company showed the possible configurations, and the most impressive of them contains one Grace processor and two Hopper GPUs! One can only guess how much such a bundle consumes, but the Grace CPU Superchip, together with memory, requires 500 watts. In general, apart from the configuration on the same board, Nvidia allows you to combine Grace CPU Superchip and eight GPU Hoppers.

Grace CPU Superchip is focused on the data center for AI infrastructure and high performance computing.
The company says Grace CPU Superchip-based solutions will be available in the first half of next year.
