NVIDIA introduced DLSS 3: increases FPS in games, but not on older graphics cards

NVIDIA DLSS image upscaling technology is truly revolutionary – thanks to artificial intelligence and tensor cores in RTX-series graphics cards, users in certain video games can significantly increase the frame rate without losing image quality. And if in the first generation DLSS worked relatively well, then the transition to the second generation really changed the situation on the market – 216 video games made it possible to increase FPS at a resolution that practically did not differ from native. The only problem is that 3rd generation DLSS works even better, but not everyone will get access to the technology.

The problem with the latest technology is that it works exclusively on the power of the GeForce RTX 40 series video cards – it is thanks to their hardware that the user gets access to the third generation of DLSS, while on the flagship RTX 30 models, apparently, the hardware capabilities are not enough. It turns out that NVIDIA literally cut off all video cards of past generations from the new feature, which should significantly increase the frame rate in the respective games. And gamers will definitely want this technology, because it works very well and does a great job with image upscaling.

According to the information that was presented at yesterday’s NVIDIA presentation, DLSS 3 allows you to increase the frame rate in a video game up to four times compared to the standard project launch mode. That is, if Cyberpunk 2077 had 23 frames per second, then after activating DLSS 3, the frequency rises to 80+ FPS. This is actually a significant difference, although it probably all depends on the resolution and graphics settings. But only thanks to DLSS 3 in Cyberpunk 2077 it was possible to get 120 FPS in 4K resolution, which a year ago seemed simply impossible at maximum graphics settings.

True, as with the entire presentation of NVIDIA, the situation is not entirely clear. During the event, Cyberpunk 2077 was shown, where the performance increase is really noticeable, but then graphics with other games appeared on the official website – and there the FPS increase is actually not so catastrophic. Most video games have received double the frame rate when using DLSS 3, while the list of supported projects is noticeably shorter than that presented in DLSS 2. Moreover, many games from the list have not even been released yet, so it will not be possible to appreciate the visual difference even after purchasing a video card on moment of release.
