Nvidia will programmatically limit the hashrate of RTX 3060 graphics cards and launch CMP chips for miners

The largest manufacturer of video accelerators Nvidia decided at the software level to deal with the shortage of video cards, which are being bought by miners. At the same time, a special series of chips for mining will be developed.

On RTX 3060 graphics cards, the hash rate will be cut by 50% via drivers. At the same time, the company is not going to lose huge demand from miners. For them, a special chip for mining Nvidia CMP (Cryptocurrency Mining Processor) was announced.

When developing Nvidia CMP, engineers optimized the chip for maximum mining efficiency. The voltage on the cores of the chip is reduced, as well as the frequencies, but the cooling is improved. In addition, these cards lack video outputs to reduce production costs. Mining cards will appear on the market at the end of the 1st quarter, or at the beginning of the 2nd quarter.

“Creating customized products for customers with special needs is the best way to go. With the help of CMP, we will help miners build the most efficient datacenters, while keeping GeForce RTX graphics cards for gamers. ”
reported in the company’s blog.

Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics cards will hit the market on February 25, but they will not be so interesting for miners:

“The RTX 3060 drivers will determine the GPU load specific to the Ethereum mining algorithm. If such a load is detected, the hash rate will be programmatically limited by about 50%. ”

Nothing has been said about other mining algorithms yet, but it is possible that restrictions will be introduced for them.

In mid-January, it was already reported that Nvidia is considering the possibility of resuming the release of specialized video cards for cryptocurrency mining. Previously, graphics cards for mining on Nvidia graphics chips were already released, but no restrictions were introduced for the corresponding GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 gaming video cards.
