NY Legal Medical Institute identifies cause of death of Robert De Niro’s grandson

The cause of death of Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, grandson of Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro, has been identified. According to a communiqué to the CNN by the New York Medical Examiner’s Office, the 19-year-old’s death in July was the result of a toxic combination of four types of prescription drugs and two types of illicit drugs – one of them cocaine. His death was ruled an accident.

A woman was arrested in connection with her possible connection to the teenager’s death. Sofia Marks was arrested on charges of selling drugs to a minor, a police source told CNN at the end of July. Marks has not been charged with murder, the source said at the time.

Actress Drena De Niro, daughter of Robert De Niro, wrote about the loss of her son in an Instagram post at the time of his death.

“You have been my joy, my heart and everything that has ever been pure and real in my life,” the caption read in part. “I don’t know how to live without you, but I will try to continue spreading the love and light that you made me feel so much as your mother. You were so deeply loved and appreciated and I wish only love could save you.”

She tagged the son’s father, the plastic artist Carlos Rodriguez, who goes by Carlos Mare, in the post.
