The American company NYDIG reported that in 2021, more than $3 trillion in transactions were made in the Bitcoin network. This is more than passed payments through American Express.
The NYDIG report notes that the volume of transactions in the Bitcoin network amounted to $3 trillion in 2021. During the same period, the American Express payment system processed payments for $1.3 trillion, and Discover – for $504 billion. At the same time, popular payment systems Visa and Mastercard processed payments for $13.5 trillion and $7.7 trillion, respectively.
“In our view, this is an astonishing growth for a payment network that recently turned 13 years old,” the report highlights.
At the same time, analysts noted that the statistics show transactions of all types. It is likely that the majority of bitcoin transaction volume is for buying and selling coins for investment, not for payments. At the same time, the volume of transactions in bitcoins is almost doubling every year. For comparison, the volume of payments in the Visa system is growing by 10% annually.
The NYDIG data differs markedly from the data collected by Galaxy Digital. In mid-December, it was reported that the volume of transactions in the Bitcoin network reached $12 trillion in 2021. The NYDIG data is consistent with information provided by BlockData.
