The New York Police Department (NYPD) said it dismantled the New York University (NYU) camp this Friday morning (3), following a request from the school.
NYU requested “assistance in dispersing the illegal encampment on its property,” said NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry.
“Per their request, we are on scene and our officers will assist with unparalleled professionalism,” Daughtry said.
The camp dismantling comes shortly after the NYPD was used to help break up the Columbia University camp and Hamilton Hall — and at a time when campus protests have erupted across the country, with many students calling on colleges to withdraw investments from companies that support Israel and the war in Gaza.
Daughtry posted a redacted letter from NYU dated May 2, 2024, stating in part that the individuals operating the Green Street Walkway persisted for six days and “their presence created an ongoing risk of violence due to the presence and behavior of hundreds of individuals unaffiliated with NYU attracted to the camp, including acts of vandalism.”
“Incidences of violence were encouraged and occurred with greater frequency and intensity on other New York City campuses and across the country, creating an unacceptable risk to our community,” the letter continues.
