NYT: Israel Says US Commanded to Kill Revolutionary Guard Colonel

Israel has told the United States that it ordered the assassination of a Revolutionary Guards colonel, according to information published Wednesday in The New York Times.

Colonel Sayad Honda was assassinated on Sunday when two men on motorcycles opened fire on him in eastern Tehran, according to the official IRNA news agency. According to Iranian state television, he was a member of the al-Quds Force, the elite unit of the Revolutionary Guards responsible for the Iranian army’s foreign operations.

Iran has accused “elements of global arrogance” of ordering the assassination of the colonel, an expression Tehran uses for the United States and its allies, such as Israel.

“According to an intelligence official who is monitoring the case, Israel has indicated to US officials that it has ordered the attack,” the New York Times wrote yesterday.

According to the source, who spoke to the American newspaper on condition of anonymity, Israel told the US that the purpose of this operation was to demand the termination of the activities of a group operating within the al-Qaeda.

On Tuesday, thousands of Iranians paid tribute to Colonel Hodai, who was described as a “witness.” “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” the crowd chanted at his funeral.

Iran’s army’s general staff announced Monday that they have launched an investigation into the “exact circumstances of Honda”‘s assassination, and President Ebrahim Raisi has said Tehran will “take revenge” for his death.
