The fourth episode of “The Sympathizer” premieres on Max this Sunday (5) and has directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (“City of God” and “Two Popes”). The series is an adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
Production follows OA spy's conflictsO French-Vietnamese communist who, after acting in the Vietnam War and being exiled to the United States, gets a job as a cultural consultant on a Hollywood film.
In this Sunday's episode, the Captain, protagonist of the plot, goes to the set of a war film in which the character played by Robert Downey Jr. is the director. He makes a very authentic film, “but Americans aren't very good at seeing the world through lenses other than their own and that's the central joke of the episode,” said Meirelles.
“Working with Robert was the highlight. No one is a star by chance. In each scene he delivered different ways of saying the text, throwing pieces in, surprising and provoking the actors with whom he was acting. It's impossible to work with him if you're not very connected. We got along really well and I would gladly repeat the experience of having him on set,” he said.
The title stars Hoa Xuande (“A Stitch in Time”) and, in addition to the Oscar winner for “Oppenheimer” also features an Emmy winner Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve” and “Grey's Anatomy”) in the cast.
In total, the series has seven episodes, which are released weekly on the HBO streaming service.
