OAS approves resolution condemning invasion of Mexican embassy in Ecuador

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) approved this Wednesday (10) a resolution that condemns the invasion of the Mexican embassy in Quito by Ecuadorian security forces to arrest former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas.

The text was approved with 29 votes in favor, one vote against, one abstention and two countries absent.

The document reaffirms “the obligation of all States to guarantee respect for the privileges and immunities of diplomatic missions and the principle of inviolability, in accordance with international law, as a fundamental and crucial requirement for peaceful relations between countries”.

The resolution also reinforces that diplomatic mission locations must not be used in a manner incompatible with their functions.

The OAS also called on Mexico and Ecuador to begin a dialogue and take immediate action to resolve the matter.

During an extraordinary session of the organization on Tuesday (9), Ecuador had asked the OAS to update the rules on political asylum “to eradicate new phenomena of international organized crime”.
