A court in the US imposed imprisonment 8.5 years to Jessica Watkins, a member of the far-right organization Oath Keepers, for participating in storming the capitol which took place on January 6, 2021.
Watkins she was found guilty last November by a Washington federal court for obstruction of official process, conspiracy and obstructing police officers during the riots.
THE Judge Emit Meta said today that it was “particularly difficult” to convict Watkins after she testified about her struggle with being transgender and because she cooperated with authorities investigating the Jan. 6 events. But all that “doesn’t erase” what he did that day, he explained.
The federal prosecutors were asking for Watkins to be sentenced to 18 years in prison. She, sobbing, asked Meta to issue a “fair decision”. “My actions and behavior on that fateful day were wrong and, as I understand it now, criminal,” he said.
Later today Metta will announce the sentencing of another member of the organization, Kenneth Harrelson, who was also found guilty of conspiring to prevent Congress from ratifying Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential victory.
