Magazines from the 2000s were characterized by judging and pointing out bodies that would be “out of standard”. During this period, anyone who appeared on covers or in fashion editorials and did not have a “negative belly” was considered overweight.
Several people were accused of being fat or overweight, which caused a generation to have image problems and eating disorders.
According to Raquel Mello, a psychologist specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, this obsession with thinness comes from a patriarchal culture, in which women are placed in a position of objectification. “In the 90’s and 2000’s, models needed to be super thin and that’s still the case today, the fat phobia persists even today”, she says.
She points out how the adolescence phase is decisive for future traumas and disorders.
“Image distortion is very common in teenagers. Most eating disorders begin in adolescence. A lot of these teens don’t deal with it, and all of a sudden they have an eating disorder like bulimia and anorexia,” she explains.
Raquel also reinforces the importance of treating any type of disorder. “If the person is not treated, this can continue for the rest of their lives and even lead to death, as in severe anorexia”.
