Occupation of private and public MS beds is almost total, says infectious disease specialist

The occupation of Covid-19 beds in both the public and private networks is almost at the limit in Mato Grosso do Sul, according to infectious disease specialist and professor at UFMS, Mauricio Pompilio.

“The situation remains worrying, especially in the capital, in the public and private network, since the last few weeks, with a progressive increase in cases of Covid and influenza, the units were filling the beds”, he said.

According to survey of CNN Agencythe bed occupancy rate in Mato Grosso do Sul is 90%.

He further explained that there is also a large demand for non-Covid beds and for that reason, “we were not able to quickly convert new beds specifically for Covid.”

The infectious disease specialist said that most of those hospitalized are elderly people over 80 years of age or younger people with an incomplete regimen or without any dose of the vaccine.

Another factor of concern is the removal of health professionals infected with the virus: “There is a significant number of workers on leave, we have hospitalized professionals in intensive care in the municipality, this generates discomfort and concern for the front line.”

Mauricio believes that the situation can improve “within a week or two”: “We can stabilize and maybe reduce cases and hospitalizations.”
