Occurrences of environmental crimes grow 88% in the Amazon, points out PRF

The occurrences of environmental crimes in the Legal Amazon jumped from 932 to 1,754 in the period from August 2023 to September 2024, according to unpublished data from the Federal Highway Police (PRF). As a result, the average number of crimes rose 88%.

The main crimes are deforestation, illegal mining and mineral extraction.

Another number that draws attention in the PRF records are the seizures of minerals, which grew by 170%, and those of wood, by 65%.

According to the PRF leadership, the numbers reflect the “Amazon Plan: Security and Sovereignty (Amas Plan)”, launched by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) last year, which includes not only the Federal Highway Police (PRF), but also other security forces involved.

During this period, the PRF carried out 3,563 inspection actions, an increase of 148% compared to the same period last year. The number of people inspected grew by 115%, from 13,226 to more than 28 thousand, and the number of vehicles, by 110%, from 13,526 to 28,607. The focus, according to members of the institution, is to reinforce inspection.

During the operations, equipment used in illegal mining was also destroyed, such as ferries, engines, tractors, excavators, trucks and even planes and helicopters.

Under the command of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the Plan has a total investment of R$1.2 billion in resources from the Amazon Fund, via the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).
