Ocean Viking rescued 360 people in two days in the Mediterranean

The non-governmental organization SOS Méditerranée announced yesterday Wednesday that the Ocean Viking ship rescued since yesterday Tuesday about 360 people in danger in boats trying to reach European shores. Migrant departures from the coast of Africa generally multiply in the summer when navigation conditions are better, but the central Mediterranean sea route is always among the deadliest in the world. Ocean Viking carried out six rescue operations in two days in areas off the Tunisian, Libyan and Italian coasts. After initially rescuing 120 people the day before yesterday, the vessel then picked up, not far from the Italian island of Lampedusa, 53 more who were aboard a “metal vessel, overloaded, taking on water and sinking”. All those on board were rescued by lifeboats before being “transferred to an Italian coast guard vessel”, the NGO said, adding that the migrants, including women and children, had departed from Sfax, Tunisia.
