Searches for the terms “submarine”, “Titanic” and “missing submarine” on Google increased substantially with the case of the implosion of the submersible Titan, owned by OceanGate, which left five dead when trying to make a tourist visit to the wreckage of the famous ship. The data is from Google Trends.
During the 18th and 24th of June, while the search for the missing, speculation about the remaining oxygen on the vessel and the resolution of the case took over the debate on social networks, searches for “submarine” in Brazil increased 58 times (+5,750%) .
Searches for “Titanic” grew 16 times (+1,500%). According to Google Trends, Brazil was the 4th country in the world with the most interest in searching for Titanic in the period, occupying the 13th position in the ranking of searches for submarines.
Some of the most frequently asked questions on Google about the incident were: “How many people are on the missing submarine?”; “How is a submarine inside?”; “What does the missing submarine look like?”; “Who is on the missing submarine?”; and “How long can a submarine stay submerged?”.
Among the most asked questions on Google in the last five years about the Titanic are: “How many people died on the Titanic?”; “Where did the Titanic sink?; “When did the Titanic sink?; “How many people survived on the Titanic?; and “Why did the Titanic sink?”.

The company Oceangate sold tourist trips to the wreck of the Titanic for US$ 250,000 (about RS 1.2 million) per person, made through a submersible named Titan.
The vehicle was made of carbon fiber and titanium and weighed 10.4 tonnes, with room for five adults, according to the company.
Five people died in the failed expedition to the bottom of the ocean, including Stockton Rush, CEO and founder of OceanGate.
The other passengers were Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son, Sulaiman; Hamish Harding, a billionaire aviation entrepreneur; and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, led several expeditions to the Titanic and oversaw the recovery of many artifacts from the wreck.
Several allegations about the Titan’s safety were raised, with former company employees coming forward with allegations against the company and the project.
