OECD begins Brazil’s accession process; Russia raises tension over Ukraine

The council of ministers of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), based in Paris, approved an invitation letter that opens the way for the beginning of negotiations on Brazil’s accession to the entity. Brazil has already fulfilled 103 of the 251 requirements to join the organization and has asked for recognition of the fulfillment of another 50.

In this episode of CNN Mundo, Lourival Sant’Anna presents an analysis of the implications of Brazil’s possible entry into the OECD, with the participation of the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, Marcelo Guaranys, and the economist Otaviano Canuto, who was directly involved with the subject matter.

Another highlight is the escalation of tension on the border between Russia and Ukraine. The Russian government said the US response to its demands to follow a diplomatic path to resolve the impasse in the region was unsatisfactory. Russia has moved more troops and weapons to the border, and NATO has also stepped up military aid to Ukraine and its Eastern European allies.

This week’s episode also brings together a balance of the main news on the international scene, including the damage caused by the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus in the United States, the decision of the Swedish health agency not to recommend the vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years against Covid-19 and the action of a group of military that overthrew President Roch Kaboré in Burkina Faso, in northwest Africa.
