“Of 11 musicians, 10 are women,” says conductor of musical “Hairspray”

The musical director Claudia Eliseu conductor of the Brazilian production of “Hairspray” cited the importance of female representation in the show. The revelation was made during a press conference, which took place this Wednesday (4), in São Paulo.

“Of the 11 musicians, 10 are women. This shows that we need to put women in the places where they belong and in what they know how to do,” she says. Despite having been in the musical theater business for 13 years, she had never worked with the creative team of “Hairspray” before and also talked about her experience.

“I realized it was real, that they wanted to make a difference in this musical, I felt ready to deliver this show”, she says. In addition to a great cast, the actor and singer Tiago Abravanel is responsible for directing and acting in the play as Edna Turnblad.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, “Hairspray” tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, an optimistic teenager who dreams of dancing on local TV show The Corny Collins Show. Tracy challenges social prejudices and beauty standards, fighting for equality and racial integration, while pursuing her own dreams. The musical is celebrated for its vibrant numbers and message of acceptance and diversity.

“Hairspray” became popular on Broadway in 2002. Its story is inspired by an American film of the same name released in 1988. Furthermore, the production had a remake starring John Travolta in 2007.

In São Paulo, the play opens on September 5th at Teatro Renault and runs until October 13th. Tickets are still available on the Tickets For Fun (T4F) website. Before heading to the capital of São Paulo, the play passed through Rio de Janeiro, in a short season, which lasted from the beginning of July until August 18, at the Teatro Riachuelo.
