The Swiss Minister of the Environment, Simonetta Sommaruga, has gone viral for recommending that people bathe as a couple to save energy and mitigate the environmental crisis that the planet is experiencing.
Her proposal has generated divided comments between those who have criticized the official’s proposal and those who have made fun of the savings strategies. The minister’s words come just when the world is experiencing its biggest gas, electricity and food crisis due to circumstances such as the war in Ukraine, climate change and the transition to clean energy.
According to information from The vanguard, Sommaruga proposed bathing as a couple as a saving measure, in order to reduce energy consumption by 15 percent. Turning off the computer and the lights when not in use or showering together were some of the minister’s recommendations.
Faced with the controversy of his words, Sommaruga pointed out to a second media outlet that “after a certain age, showering together is no longer appropriate” and addressed his proposal only to young people.
Despite his attempt to correct the situation, Sommaruga was the target of criticism, ridicule and memes on social networks, undermining his credibility in society.
However, the minister has not been the only president to make peculiar proposals in favor of the environment, as the president of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann, suggested that money can be saved if people “use wet wipes instead of to shower all the time”, a method of cleaning that not many agreed to implement.
