Ohio: Traffic ban in Akron, after riots over the death of an African-American man by police fire

The city of Akron, Ohio, declared a state of emergency and an overnight curfew and canceled two July 4th fireworks displays after protests over the killing of an unarmed African-American man and the incidents which took place on Sunday night.

The riots broke out after police released footage from body-worn body cameras. The footage shows officers shooting 25-year-old Jayland Walker as he tried to avoid a traffic stop. The medical examiner counted about 60 bullet wounds on his body.

Demonstrations throughout the day on Sunday were peaceful afterward, and despite pleas from Walker’s family for no incidents, Akron police declared a rally illegal due to “destruction of property.” Police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters, according to television station WKYC-TV.

Mayor Dan Horrigan said the city center is closed to traffic from 9pm until 6am until further notice. “We have seen significant property damage in downtown Akron. Windows have been broken at small businesses along Main Street. We will not tolerate property destruction or violence,” he said in a statement.

Jayland Walker’s death is the latest police killing of an unarmed African-American man in the US. Police say Walker had a gun in his car but left it in the front seat when he tried to flee on foot. He is also believed to have fired one shot from inside the vehicle, Police Chief Stephen Mylett said.
