A social media video shows that a massive fire broke out on Monday night in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, controlled by pro-Russian separatists from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).
Russian state news agency TASS reported that the fire started at an oil deposit in the Budennovsky district. He said the plant had been attacked by Ukraine.
The Ukrainian military rarely commented on attacks on infrastructure in Donetsk, but several fuel and ammunition depots in DPR-controlled territory were attacked this month.
Ukrainian officials said that with the acquisition of long-range artillery and howitzers from the West, the military was focused on attacking Russian logistics and command positions.
A TASS reporter in Donetsk said the fire could be seen in several areas of the city, “with the flames reaching a few tens of meters in height”.
TASS said the fuel and lubricant tanks were burning. Video on Tuesday showed smoke was still rising from the site, several hours after the fire started.
