Oil production in Venezuela reaches 1 million barrels per day, says minister

Venezuela’s oil production reached one million barrels a day in December, the oil minister said, above the previous year’s average and amid US sanctions.

In 2020, the average was 569 thousand barrels per day (bpd), according to the government. In November of this year, the country produced 824,000 bpd, reported OPEC in its monthly bulletin. Critics attribute the drop in production to years of disinvestment and mismanagement, as well as the impact of sanctions against state-owned oil company PDVSA since 2019.

“See that, despite the criminal threats of blocking the United States, here there is a people standing, with dignity and at the forefront, the oil working class,” said Minister Tareck El Aissami, quoted Saturday in a note distributed by the channel state-run Telesur news.

According to official reports cited by the television channel, the highest level of production in Venezuela comes from the Orinoco Peripheral Belt, with 577,000 barrels per day of oil.
