Executed today at Oklahoma a 62-year-old American who had been sentenced to death for the murder of an elderly couple in October 2003.
Scott Eisber was given an injection lethal solution at Macalister Correctional Facility. This is the third death row inmate executed in the United States since the beginning of the year.
Almost 20 years after “his horrible crimes (…) justice was served”, said Oklahoma Attorney General Gendner Drummond, who was present at the execution.
According to the case file, Scott Eisber broke into the home of the Cantrells, neighbors of his ex-partner Kathryn Smith, whom he was watching. Earlier, he had made sure that the elderly couple were not at home.
A short time later, however, 76-year-old AJ Cantrell and his 70-year-old wife Patsy returned home and a fight ensued. Eisber shot and killed Patsy Cantrell and beat her husband to death.
Present at the execution of the death row inmate was a priest, Geoffrey Hood, who had visited him in September and developed a friendly relationship with him. The death row inmate had requested the presence of the specific priest during his execution.
Last week, prison officials opposed the request, but Eiseber and Hood took legal action against it. “They deny a prisoner the right to have the spiritual of his choice at the most critical moment of his life”, emphasized their lawyers.
In 2021, the execution of a Texan man who wanted his priest to touch his body during the administration of the lethal solution was postponed.
In order not to postpone the process, the Oklahoma authorities finally accepted the presence of the priest at the execution of Eisber, citing the need to close this painful chapter as soon as possible for the relatives of the victims.
