Oklahoma passes bill banning abortion from conception

The Lower House of the state of Oklahoma, United States, approved this Thursday a law that prohibits abortion from fertilization. This would make Oklahoma the state with the most restrictive regulations regarding termination of pregnancy.

The vote to approve this law came at a time when the right to abortion in the United States is threatened after a Supreme Court document was leaked showing a provision to reverse the 50-year-old decision that guarantees that right.

This law will take effect the moment the governor, Republican Kevin Stitt, signs it. Oklahoma society, especially feminist groups, is alarmed, as Stitt has already announced that he will sign any restrictions on abortion that come to his table.

US media indicate that if approved, the new Oklahoma text would become the most restrictive anti-abortion rule in the country, since the law prohibits abortion from fertilization, except when the life of the mother is in danger or when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.

Separately, US Vice President Kamala Harris called the Oklahoma vote “the latest in a series of blatant attacks by lawmakers on women.” In addition, she invited Americans to elect leaders who defend abortion rights “at the local, state and federal levels.”
