German Chancellor Olaf Solz has called on the European Union to prepare for a multibillion-dollar solidarity fund to rebuild Ukraine after the war, according to Reuters.
Speaking to parliament ahead of the EU summit, Solz said French President Emanuel Macron was right that Ukraine’s accession to the EU was not a matter of months or years, which means it is even more important to focus on realistic, immediate support.
“Reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and revitalization of the Ukrainian economy will cost billions,” he said. “We as the EU must begin to lay the foundations for a solidarity fund funded by contributions from the EU and its partners.”
