Olaf Solz: Whoever attacks Jews attacks us all

“Whoever attacks Jews, insults them or hurts them, attacks us all,” the Chancellor emphasizes Olaf Solz in an interview with the magazine Der Spiegel and pledges that the German state will do everything in order to protect Jewish life in Germany. In the same interview, the chancellor is in favor of widespread deportations of illegal immigrants.

The Israel it has, under international law, every justification to defend itself against the terrorism of Hamas“, underlines Mr. Soltz and repeats his warning to Iran and Hezbollah not to get involved in the conflict. “I’m not the only one saying it, the Americans are sending the same message. I am sure that our warnings are heeded carefully by those to whom they concern.”, he emphasizes. Asked whether, in the event of ground operations in the Gaza Strip, German soldiers could be sent, the chancellor avoided answering, pointing out that “the situation is too serious to make abstract speculations”.

Referring to the anti-Semitic incidents recorded in recent days in Germany, Olaf Scholz assures Jews of the solidarity of society and emphasizes that “the state will do everything to protect Jewish life in Germany and we will not allow ourselves to be divided as citizens of this country”. “Anyone who attacks, insults or hurts the Jews is attacking us all“, he characteristically says and adds that “we must resist decisively against anyone who shouts anti-Semitic slogans, burns flags of the state of Israel and cheers the death of people as a result of Hamas terrorism”. All this has no place in Germany, he says, describing the Hamas attack as “inhumane” and “barbaric”. No one should applaud her – especially in a country inextricably linked to the Holocaust, she warns.

He has confidence in the anti-missile system “Iron Dome”

About whether he himself was frightened by the incident with the Hamas attack alert at the Tel Aviv airport on his departure from Israel, Mr. Soltz answers in the negative and explains that he has confidence in the “Iron Dome” anti-missile system. He thought, however, he says, of the terror that the citizens of Israel experience every day.

“We must finally deport on a large scale those who have no right to stay in Germany”

The chancellor also refers to his government’s immigration policy and admits that unrestricted immigration endangers the welfare state, while declaring that “restricting immigration does not make us inhuman” and calling for “large-scale” deportations. “We must finally deport on a large scale those who have no right to stay in Germany. Anyone who cannot claim protection and has no prospect of staying, must leave. We need to deport more and faster,” he underlines. The government, he continues, has the responsibility of ensuring the functioning of our community. “This also includes a certain cruelty”, he clarifies and refers to a package of measures aimed at limiting irregular immigration to Germany. He talks, among other things, about the recognition of Georgia and Moldova as safe countries of origin, as they wish to join the EU, for the application of the European regulation on the registration of refugees in the countries of arrival and distribution to the member states, for stricter border controls, but also for benefits in kind and not in money for asylum seekers. “What is important is that our politics is not based on resentment. We have to be tough when someone has no right to stay. We have to be open and modernized at the same time because we need labor from other countries”, states Mr. Scholz and notes that about 13 million workers in Germany are about to retire, so there is a need for specialized staff, doctors, engineers, nurses, etc.

“Anyone who wants unrestricted immigration must be honest enough to admit that in such a case we would not be able to maintain the welfare state we have today (…) Liberal democracy does not have to give up its humanitarian face in order to survive, but he must be able to act and the state must have things under control,” he explains.

The rise of the far right in Germany

Asked to comment on the rise of the extreme right in Germany, the chancellor states that he has long been troubled by the rise of right-wing populist forces in Europe in general. “This is not just happening here, it existed much earlier in Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway, and more recently in Sweden and Finland. The question is: Why is this happening in countries which, from the perspective of the rest of the world, are among the happiest of all, with great economic power, good wages and a functioning welfare state,” asks Mr. Soltz and concludes by saying that the phenomenon has to do with the insecurity of many people after the pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and climate change.
