Oleg Tinkov and Tinkoff are arguing about the rights to the brand: who owns them?

According to Vedomosti, in fact, Tinkoff Bank does not own the Tinkoff trademarks, but only uses them. He is a licensee, that is, he has the right to use trademarks until a certain time.

We are talking about ten trademarks, including the current emblem of the bank, Tinkoff, Tinkoff, Tinkoff digital, Tinkoff Credit Systems, TCS Bank, TCS Bank and others. All of these marks are owned by Larkpark Services Inc. of the Virgin Islands, Trident Trust Company of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and Trident Chambers (BVI). The same scheme applies to the Tinkoff Insurance trademarks and others.

Oleg Tinkov and Tinkoff are arguing about the rights to the brand: who owns them?

According to Brand Finance, the value of the Tinkoff brand is $451 million, but if the brand is sold, the price could reach $1 billion, according to Gleb Sakhrai, founder of the PRT communications group. He clarified that in Russia trademarks are registered according to specific classes, so it is likely that Tinkoff in the banking sector has moved to Potanin’s Interros holding, and in some other category it could have remained with Tinkov. In his opinion, Potanin now needs the Tinkoff Bank brand for the time between the moment of signing the agreement on the purchase of shares from Tinkov and the moment of transition to a new brand.

Yesterday Oleg Tinkov published a statement in which he said goodbye to Russia and Tinkoff Bank. He also noted that he was taking away the brands Tinkoff and La Datcha, which belong to his family, from the country.

After that, Tinkoff commented on the statement of Oleg Tinkov, noted that Tinkoff Bank owns all legal rights to the Tinkoff brand.
