Oleksiy Reznikov resigns from Ukraine’s Defense Ministry after revelations of corruption scandal

Her defense minister Ukrainian Oleksii Reznikov, who has been targeted after a corruption scandal in his ministry was revealed, is expected to take up another government post, the head of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s party announced in parliament on Sunday (2/5).

The current head of the military intelligence service (GUR) Kirill Budanov will take over as the new defense minister.

“War dictates the movement of personnel,” David Arahamia explained in a Telegram post. “Times and circumstances call for strengthening and reconstruction. This is happening now and will happen in the future as well (…) The enemy is preparing to attack. We are preparing to defend ourselves and recover what is ours,” he added.

Arahamia, as reported by the Athens News Agency, did not specify when Reznikov will leave the ministry and which office he will assume.

Earlier, in his daily address, President Zelensky reiterated that the situation is “very difficult” in the Donetsk region, where heavy fighting is taking place, but made no mention of the minister’s removal.
