Olinda City Hall Cancels Street Carnival in 2022

The city of Olinda (PE) announced this Wednesday (5) the cancellation of Carnival 2022. The city, which is one of the most traditional destinations in the country for the celebrations of the holiday, said that the decision was taken in view of the increase in cases of Covid-19 and Influenza, especially of the H3N2 strain.

At a press conference, Mayor Professor Lupércio (Solidarity) said that the city “was ready to hold Carnival in 2022, as long as conditions due to the pandemic were favorable. However, the pandemic scenario does not allow for this, which is the biggest Carnival in the world.”

It is the second year that the party has been canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and it causes concern in the city’s cultural sector, which profits a lot from tourism and Carnival parties.

The city hall announced investments in the city’s culture, as a way to help those who will suffer the impacts of the absence of parties. A program called “Auxílio Carnaval” targets street vendors, entities, groups and artists who worked at the time, and another, called Circuito Cultural: Fomento à Cultura, will invest in the organization of municipal cultural festivals.

With the arrival of Ômicron, experts associate the increase in cases in recent days in the country to the strain. The state of Pernambuco registered 272 new cases of the disease this Tuesday (4), and Brazil, 18,759.
