Omicron gallops in France: New case record with over 330,000 infections and increased deaths

France has set a new record of more than 332,000 new cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours, at a time when the death toll has also risen, with the country battling the fifth wave of the virus.

The final number of new covid-19 infections was 332,252 – a figure slightly lower than a first estimate made at the French National Assembly by Health Minister Olivier Veran, who spoke of about 335,000 new cases.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 in hospitals has increased by 246 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 97,670. The number of Covid patients in intensive care units is 3,695 and more than 20,000 Covid patients are hospitalized in total, the highest number since the end of May.
