Growth in Britain’s construction slowed in December as it was hit by Omicron’s rapid expansion, according to a survey released on Friday.
The IHS Markit / CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Purchasing ‘Index (PMI) fell to a three-month low of 54.3 in December from 55.5 in November. A Reuters poll of economists showed a 54.0 mark.
The activity of civil engineers decreased for the first time since February and the growth in the commercial sector slowed down. Only construction rose in December, the survey showed.
Many respondents reported an uproar over COVID-19 cases, which set new records last month as the Omicron variant swept the country.
“UK construction companies closed last year on a slightly weaker basis as new pandemic restrictions have hampered recovery, especially in commercial and civil engineering,” said Tim Moore, IHS Markit’s director.
