Ômicron is identified in 31% of Covid-19 cases in December, says Institute

An analysis of positive samples for SARS-Cov-2, the new coronavirus, shows that 31.7% of infections were caused by the Ômicron variant between December 1st and December 15th.

The study was carried out by Instituto Todos pela Saúde in partnership with Dasa and DB Molecular laboratories, and tests were collected from 16 Brazilian states.

In total, 30,483 RT-PCR tests were performed in private laboratories during this period, and 640 were positive for Covid-19 – a percentage of 2.1%. Of these positives, 203 were caused by the Ômicron variant, a cutoff of 31.7%.

Tests with infections by the variant came from the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Bahia, Goiás, Santa Catarina and Tocantins.

“This survey includes only two laboratories, but you can see the speed at which Ômicron is spreading across Brazil, as well as in other countries,” says the Todos pela Saúde Institute in a statement.
