Omicron mutation: Israel changes strategy – What to do from now on with PCR, rapid and self test

Changes in the quarantine and vaccination policy are proceeding Israel, in an effort to ensure lasting protection for the vulnerable from the epidemic wave fueled by Omicron mutation of coronavirus, as announced by the Ministry of Health.

More specifically, the molecular tests (PCR) will be intended for people over 60 years of age and with a weak immune system, while in the lower risk populations the diagnostic test will be performed with rapid test antigen, said officials of the Ministry of Health.

Those vaccinated against Covid-19 exposed to carriers of the virus will use self test to determine if they should be quarantined.

“It is an important change aimed at identifying the vulnerable population faster, intervening and preventing serious disease. “Now we are focusing less on infection rates,” said the director general of the Ministry of Health during a press conference.

Israel hopes that antiviral drugs from Pfizer Inc and Merck & Co Inc will help keep hospitalizations and serious incidents at a low level, even if the number of daily cases is expected to set a new record in the coming weeks, according to the APE-MPE.

The new policies will take effect on Friday, January 7, the ministry said.

It is noted that Israel has recorded about 1.4 million cases since the beginning of the pandemic and more than 8,000 deaths. 64% of the 9.4 million population is fully vaccinated. The fourth dose of the vaccine was given to the vulnerable this week.
