In a couple of months – 6 to 8 weeks – one in two Europeans will be infected with the Omicron variant. The alarm comes directly from the WHO, according to which the new variant is so contagious that it is necessary to work on other vaccines, able to ensure “a high impact on the prevention of infection and transmission, as well as on the prevention of severe diseases and death”.
WHO Europe director Hans Kluge explained: “In some European countries the peak of the Omicron variant has already been reached but the situation within the continent is very varied therefore always remember to protect the most vulnerable“. And again: «I am also deeply concerned about the fact that the variant is moving east and therefore we have yet to see its full impact in countries where vaccination levels are lower and where there is a risk of a more serious disease in the unvaccinated ».
In Italy, according to the latest available data, the virus has reached 220 thousand people, double the day before and the highest number ever. The deaths in 24 hours were as many as 294: these are figures that have not been recorded since last May.
