Ômicron’s victim died in the ICU five days after being notified

The first official victim of Ômicron in Brazil died just five days after having the case notified by the Health Department of Aparecida de Goiânia, in Goiás.

According to information obtained by the CNN, the city’s Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance, where the case was registered, informed the Ministry of Health that during an investigation into a Covid-19 outbreak in a long-term care facility on December 22 of last year, one of the inmates was referred for emergency care.

Days later, the victim was taken to an Emergency Care Unit (UPA), transferred to a vacancy in the ICU at the municipal hospital of Aparecida de Goiânia, but died on December 27th.

According to information provided by local health authorities to the federal government, the victim is a 68-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and high blood pressure. Symptoms started on December 20th with coughing, shortness of breath and respiratory discomfort.

The man had complete immunization against Covid-19, according to data recorded by the Ministry of Health and obtained by CNN. He had received vaccine doses from Coronavac and the booster from Pfizer. But pre-established health problems aggravated the situation.

The patient was transferred from the shelter to the UPA Brasicon by SAMU, on December 24, where he was hospitalized in serious condition. He had dehydration, low blood pressure, and poor oxygenation.

Given the severity of the health condition, the need for admission to an ICU was identified. The vacancy was released the following day, on December 25th.

However, according to the medical data, it was decided to wait for an improvement in ventilation to perform the transfer more safely. The transfer took place on the 26th, when the sample was collected for PCR examination. The death was registered in the morning of the 27th, at 1:31 am, motivated by septic shock.

This Thursday (6), the result of the genetic sequencing, based on the PCR test, detected the micron, of the coronavirus, this being the first death by the strain recorded in Brazil.
